Description

United States Army officer, close personal friend of Abraham Lincoln, and law clerk (1837-1861) who was the first conspicuous casualty and the first Union officer to die in the American Civil War. As colonel of the 11th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Ellsworth was killed while removing a Confederate flag from the roof of the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria, Virginia. Two rare Civil War-era keepsakes related to Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth, the first Union officer killed in the Civil War. The items include: a small brass button, .5˝ in diameter, with embossed designs of an American flag and stars and the “Union” above, which is attached to 2.25 x 1.75 sheet bearing a period ink notation: “This Button was on Col. Ellsworth's Vest 1861”; and a dual-sided Ferrotype portrait photo, 1˝ in diameter, the front containing an image of the colonel, entitled “Ellsworth the Martyr,” and the other side bears an image of Francis E. Brownell, “Brownell the Avenger,” who received a Medal of Honor for killing James W. Jackson after Jackson had shot and killed Ellsworth on May 24, 1861. Both items are presented in small individual period frames, which measure 4.75 x 4.5 and 5.75 x 5. In overall fine condition.
