Description

American flutist, composer, and conductor (1902–1984) who is perhaps best known for writing the book, music, and lyrics for the 1957 hit Broadway musical The Music Man and ‘It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.’ Two items: a TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, May 28, 1974, addressed to Robert Allen, in full: “Thank you for your good wishes on my birthday. Yes, I agree with you. Everrett Dirksen had something there about birthdays being ‘high ground in our journey through life.’ My thanks also to your wife for joining your birthday greeting. Lewiston is well placed in my memory dating back to 1921 or 1922 when, just out of high school, I was playing first flute for John Philip Sousa's Band. Again, thanks for kindness, and warmest regards to you both”; and an AMQS in black felt tip on an off-white 5.5 x 8.5 sheet of his personal stationery, signed and inscribed above, “Kindest regards to John Christopher and Robert Merritt, from Meredith Wilson, Feb. 3, ‘73, L.A., Cal,” who above adds three bars of music from the show tune ‘Seventy-Six Trombones,’ the signature song from the 1957 musical The Music Man. In overall fine condition.
