Description

Jack Kerouac's personally-owned and -worn pair of dark olive green linen pants, measuring approximately 36.5˝ long, with a 31˝ diameter elastic waistband and 27˝ inseam. The pants boast two deep pockets—perfect for carrying a small notebook and pen—and the bottoms have been shortened and carefully hemmed by hand. In fine condition, with light wear from use.

Accompanied by a letter of provenance signed by John Shen-Sampas, the executor of the estate of Jack Kerouac; Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was Kerouac’s brother-in-law and literary executor.

Jack Kerouac's style of dress was utilitarian and functional, consisting of casual staples like flannel and work shirts, jeans, simple tees, and bomber jackets, reflecting a rejection of materialism and an embrace of a blue-collar, wanderer aesthetic. His fashion decisions were characterized by comfort and authenticity rather than trend-following—evidenced in the plain, hand-mended garments from his estate—aligning with the Beat Generation's ideals of self-liberation and spontaneity.
