Description

Apollo-era pad communications intercom box from Launch Complex 39 (LC-39) at the John F. Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island in Florida. The metal box, 14? x 9.5? x 9.5?, weighs around 15 pounds and features a variety of buttons, switches, and knobs to the main panel, including two ?Page? buttons, a ?BAL (Active/Monitor)? knob, a series of six ?Channel? selection switches, four ?Level (Inc)? knobs, and a knob for ?Dual? and ?ACT/MON.? The lower half and bottom of the panel also contain a total of eight multi-pin connection ports. Four butterfly locks can be turned to open the box and reveal its electronic module and an interior parts label from the Zero Manufacturing Co. (Burbank, CA, and Monson, MA), which reads: ?ZCC128-224, D3547-20,? and has an inspection date of November 30, 1965. The top of the box bears a portion of a ?KSC Design Engineering? label, and the right side features a ?Notice of NASA Integrity Control? label, with the contractor field left blank. In very good to fine condition, with scattered marks and scuffs, and missing rubber to the right-side 'Page' button cap.

This rugged, military-spec intercom panel matches the type used in the Apollo-era White Room at Launch Complex 39, examples of which are visible in the included photograph, which depicts the Apollo 11 astronauts in the White Room atop the gantry on LC-39 Pad A. The intercom served as a local access point to the Ground Communications System (GCS) and allowed the pad leader and closeout crew to plug in headsets, select channels, and maintain real-time voice contact with Launch Control and the astronauts during spacecraft ingress. A superb, museum-quality Apollo-era artifact from the historic KSC launch pad that sent men to the moon.
