Scarce official NASA binder from the John F. Kennedy Space Center entitled “Apollo/Saturn Configuration Management Plan” (K-AM-03), issued as ‘Revision 2’ on May 1, 1969 (130-39-0002), 375 pages (approx.), 10.5 x 11.5 (2.5˝ thick), featuring a total of 16 tabbed exhibit sections that are listed below. This comprehensive binder reveals the policies and procedures implemented by NASA to control and document Apollo/Saturn hardware, systems, and facilities. It defines directives, change-control processes, and agreements between KSC and other NASA centers to ensure consistency and accountability as Project Apollo prepared for its ultimate goal: a safe and successful moon landing and return voyage to Earth.
The ‘Purpose and Scope’ preface reads, in part: “K-AM-03 establishes and defines policy, levies requirements, and assigns related responsibilities for the Apollo/Saturn Configuration Management Program at the John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC). The requirements of this document apply to all organizations supporting the Apollo/Saturn Program except those involved in the portions of the Manned Space Flight Ground Operations Support System (GOSS) located at KSC. Those projects constituting GOSS which are excluded from the configuration management requirements stated in this document are: the Launch Information Systems, the Manned Space Flight Network, and the Mission Control System…K-AM-03 translates the requirements of M-D MA-500, the Apollo Program Development Plan, and NPC 500-1, the Apollo Configuration Management Manual, for application at KSC.” Housed in its original black vinyl JFK Space Center three-ring binder.
