Scarce original brad-bound ‘second draft’ script for the 1964 musical Funny Girl, which featured a score by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill, and a book by Isobel Lennart. The script, 92 pages, 8.5 x 11, contains its original British-style red paper folder marked in pencil on the front, “‘Funny Girl.’” The opening title page, marked “4” in the upper right corner, features the playwright and date to the lower right, “Isobel Lennart, Sept. 6, 1963,” and title and summary to center: “FUNNY GIRL (Working Title) / A play with music, based on incidents in the life of Fanny Brice and Nick Arnstein.” The first act contains a total of 17 scenes, and the second act contains 10. In fine condition.
Based on the life and career of comedian and Broadway star Fanny Brice, as well as her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nicky Arnstein, Funny Girl opened on Broadway on March 26, 1964, at the Winter Garden Theatre, subsequently transferring to the Majestic Theatre and The Broadway Theatre, where it closed on July 1, 1967, to complete its total run of 1,348 performances. The musical was directed by Garson Kanin, choreographed by Carol Haney, and starred Barbra Streisand in the starring role. Streisand reprised her role in the acclaimed 1968 film adaptation, a box office smash that became the highest-grossing film of 1968 and garnered eight Academy Award nominations, with Streisand winning Best Actress in her film debut.
