Description

Heavy-duty brass-milled two-cell flashlight used in training during the Apollo era, measuring 5˝ long and 1˝ in diameter at the lens, with a swatch of white Velcro affixed near the lens. The flashlight barrel is hand-etched: "Not for O2 Usage." In very good to fine condition.

The distinctive brass flashlights used on the Apollo missions (from Apollo 7 onwards) were produced by ACR Electronics Co., a supplier of military and civilian survival equipment. They proved to be vital on the Apollo 13 mission as the crew were forced to rely on them heavily after powering down their stricken spacecraft. In a post-flight letter of thanks sent by the Apollo 13 crew to ACR Electronics they mentioned that even though the penlights were the main source of light after the power down they never wore out a single set of batteries.

This example was attributed to the personal collection of Buzz Aldrin, and erroneously sold as a flown Gemini flashlight in Regency Superior's December 2008 sale.
