Description

Handsome Soviet-made vintage circa 1959 celestial navigation star globe, measuring approximately 6˝ in diameter and set into its original 9.5˝ x 10˝ x 9.5˝ hinged wooden case, with a Russian "КБ" plate on the front dated 1959. Inside the lacquered globe shows stars, constellations, equator, ecliptic, and meridians, and is mounted in an aluminum meridian circle, divided from 0-90 degrees in four quadrants, the zeros being at the poles. Affixed inside the lid is the original Russian inspection certificate. In fine condition.

Although this celestial globe was made in the middle of the 20th century, it is almost identical to ones manufactured by Carey & Co., London, in the early 1900s. Though this long period of production shows the longevity of navigational devices, this instrument was practically out of date by the time of its manufacture. From the 1980s, portable electronic scientific calculators allowed navigators to make astronomical calculations with greater speed and accuracy than was possible with the celestial globe.
