Early circa 1965 helmet liner for the Apollo A1-C helmet, a modification of the Gemini G3-C and G4-C helmets. The orange liner, 7˝ x 10.5˝ x 5˝, is comprised of a lightweight and moldable impact-absorbing urethane foam, with a leather-like outer layer, designed to be shaped to fit snugly around the astronaut’s head. The front features two wiring ports to either side, and both the front and back of the helmet bear square Velcro sections. The rear of the helmet also bears an adhered parts label, which reads: “Helmet Liner, P.G.A., NASA Designation AHL-1C-2, Mfg. David Clark Co. Inc., P/N ACS 1199, Ser. No. 102, Size 6, April 1965.” The designation AHL-1C-2 means ‘Apollo Helmet Liner,’ suit model ‘1C’ (C is for the David Clark Co.), with very early serial number ‘102’; A1-C suit serial numbers started with serial number ‘101.’ The liner’s standard size 6 head size indicates that it was not made for a specific astronaut, and that the liner was likely used for engineering tests. In fine condition, with light wear from use.
