Description

Gavel constructed of wood removed from the White House during the Truman Reconstruction, a comprehensive dismantling and rebuilding of the interior of the White House from 1949 to 1952. The gavel measures 11.5˝ in length with a cylindrical 3.75˝ x 1.75˝ head, with an inlaid metal plaque reading: “This wood was part of the White House used in its construction about 1817 and removed in 1948.” In fine condition, with some nicks to head. This is a particularly refined example of a White House relic gavel, featuring an uncommonly early renovation date.
