American character animator (1908-1995) best remembered for his work at Walt Disney Productions and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio. At Disney, Blair worked on classic films like Pinocchio and Bambi, Mickey Mouse scenes in ‘The Sorcerer's Apprentice’ section of Fantasia, and the hippo-alligator dance in Fantasia's ‘Dance of the Hours’ sequence. After the 1941 Disney animators' strike, Blair was hired to work for Tex Avery's unit at MGM, where he became known for animating ‘Red,’ the titular female character in Red Hot Riding Hood. Leather-bound binder presented to legendary Walt Disney and MGM animator Preston Blair as the guest of honor at an event hosted by the Society of New York Animators on June 11, 1981, 11.5 x 12.75, containing signed and handwritten dedications from 24 figures of the film and animation world, many of whom add sketches to their thoughtful inscriptions. Signers include: Sal Faillace (animation director and the president of the Society of N.Y. Animators), Leonard Maltin (film critic and historian), Phil Kimmelman (head animator of Schoolhouse Rock), cartoonist Dean Yeagle (who draws Hyacinth Hippo), animator Tony Eastman (who adds a Fred Flintstone sketch), animator Doug Crane (who sketches Raggedy Ann), and many others.
