Description

Three items signed by Thornton Wilder, consisting of two one-page ALSs and an ink signature, “Thanks of Thornton Wilder,” on a light peach-colored 4.75 x 2.75 sheet. The earlier handwritten letter, [February 1955], penned on the reverse of a 4 x 5.575 postcard, in part: “You may – I believe – read excerpts from my books without special permission from author or publisher…it’s extended excerpts that begin to be problematical. Just finished another play that’ll open the Edinburgh Festival – a serious play, this time. In fact, a regular weeper.” The second letter, January 12, 1967, addressed from the Hotel Belvedere in Davos, Switzerland, in part: “Isabel flies home from Geneva tomorrow on her birthday. We telephone every other evening. She tells me that she’s been having absorbing days revisiting the places where she, our mother, and baby Janet stayed on their way home from Shanghai so long ago. (so absorbing that she felt no wish to call on the friends…who had urged her to do so: Fran Hindenite, George Simenon, the authorized translator into French of Our Town, and others).” In overall fine condition, with minor loss to the lower right corner of the letter.
