Description

"I, too, admired Walter Johnson when he pitched for the Senators"

Three TLSs from Grace Coolidge, each one page, x 9.5, The Narrows (Columbus, NC) and 112 Washington Ave. (Northampton, MA) letterhead, dated between 1939 and 1940, each addressed to Mary A. Pool of Washington, D.C. The letters include their original mailing envelopes, each signed in the upper right corner with Coolidge’s franking signature. Sections of each letter read:

December 14, 1939: “I am sorry that I am unable to locate the bronze statue about which you have made an inquiry. I seem to remember dimly a small bronze of a ball player which stood on top of a book case in the President's study in the White House but I do not remember seeing it after we returned to Northampton. It is possible that it is stored away with other things at the house in Plymouth and if I should come across it there I should be delighted to sent it to your father.”

July 4, 1940: “I, too, admired Walter Johnson when he pitched for the Senators.”

November 11, 1940: “When I was in Plymouth this summer for two weeks I tried to locate the little statue of Walter Johnson and regret that I must report ‘no luck.’ When I closed the house at the Beeches I had many things packed and sent to Plymouth and there are still many boxes which have not been opened but I went into the ones which I thought most likely to contain the article for which I was searching, all to no avail.” In overall very good to fine condition, with some light creasing, and splitting along folds.
