String-bound "General Orders No. 181," issued by order of the Secretary of War on November 1, 1862, 4.75 x 7.25, 51 pages, listing all United States Army promotions, transfers, and deaths. Noteworthy entries include the promotion of "Second Lieutenant George A. Custer, to be First Lieutenant, July 18, 1862, to fill an original vacancy," in Company M, Fifth Regiment of Cavalry; the death of Brig. Gen. Joseph K. Mansfield on "Sept. 18, 1862, of wounds received in the battle of Antietam"; and the death of Maj. Gen. Philip Kearny, "killed at the battle of Chantilly, Va., Sept. 1, 1862." In fine condition.
