United States Air Force general (1911-1997) who served as military aide to President John F. Kennedy. World War II-dated personal flight logbook of Brigadier General Godfrey McHugh, 7.5 x 4.5, dated from September 15, 1941, to December 31, 1944, with over 90 pages filled out in ink entirely in the hand of McHugh both as a citizen and as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Forces, which he joined as a captain on January 31, 1942, roughly two months after the United States entered World War II following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. McHugh has added his signature to the book a total of 47 times, with three signatures appearing on the opening ‘Identification’ page, and the balance in the lower left of each log entry. The ‘Identification,’ in addition to listing his personal and pilot information, features two affixed photos, one dated to 1940 and the other to 1944. Other photos, with handwritten notation, can be found on the front pastedown (“23 July 1944, Normandy, France”) and on the reverse of the last free end page (“Flight to Europe, Africa and South America, June-July 1944).” Notable log entries include: Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, with McHugh adding to the destination field in bold red pencil, “WAR”; October 27, 1942, “Passed C.A.A. 2TO H.P. Flight Test”; and November 11, 1942, “Local Army Flight Test, Passed on Thanksgiving Day Army Flight Test for Service Pilot Rating.” In fine condition.
