One of the earliest English descriptions of Texas—an 1831 pamphlet published to encourage colonization by Americans

Pamphlet entitled "Address to the Reader of the Documents relating to the Galveston Bay & Texas Land Company." New York: G.F. Hopkins & Son, 1831. Uncut pages bound by string, 5.75 x 9.25, 38 pages. In very good condition, with dampstaining affecting the appearance but not readability. Bibliographical reference: Graff 1494, Howes S1137.

The Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company was founded in New York in 1830 to colonize Mexican land grants in Texas held by empresarios Joseph Vehlein, David G. Burnet, and Lorenzo de Zavala. Offering one of the earliest English descriptions of Texas, this pamphlet was written to induce immigration by American settlers. It presents an optimistic, if somewhat misleading, view of Mexican colonization laws, descriptions of the climate and soil, manners and customs of its people, and prospects for business. Historians view this publication as a significant early document of Texas colonization history.
