Description

American writer (1850-1895) best known for his poems of childhood, including 'Wynken, Blynken, and Nod' and 'Little Boy Blue.' Three items signed by Eugene Field:

Cabinet-style 5.25 x 7.5 mounted portrait photo of Field, signed the lower border in black ink, “Eugene Field.” The photo bears a publication date of 1895, the same year that Field died at the age of 45 after suffering a heart attack. Given the year, it’s safe to assume that this represents one of the last photographs to be signed by the author. In fine condition. The photo is accompanied by seven additional period cabinet photos, five of which are annotated on the reverse by Field, who identifies the respective portrait subject.

Two-volume book set from the personal library of Eugene Field: The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, Vols. I and II. Later printing. London: J. C. Nimmo and Bain, 1882. Three-quarter leather with marbled boards and green slipcase, 6 x 9.5, 776 pages. Both volumes are signed in black ink by Field with his ownership signature: the first volume is signed on the half-title page, "Eugene Field, Chicago, Sept. 14, 1895"; and the second volume is signed on his personal bookplate affixed to the first free end page, "Eugene Field." A back end paper to each book features a handwritten and signed attestation from Field’s son and namesake, affirming that each volume derives from his father’s library. Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: G/None, with complete cracks to front hinges, rubbing to boards, sunning to spines, and a split to the top edge of the slipcase.

Accompanied by a limited edition 1901 copy of Eugene Field: A Study in Heredity and Contradictions, Vol. II, numbered 142/262, hardcover with slipcase.
