Description

Manuscript DS, one page, 7.75 x 12, February 8, 1646. A document issued by the Committee of Lords and Commons for the Admiralty to the Commissioners of the Navy advising that a frigate under the command of Captain Biddall in the port of Portsmouth is to be fitted with supplies and provisions. The document is signed by [the Earl of] Warwick, Alex. Bence, John Roller, and two others. Corner-mounted and framed to an overall size of 17.75 x 22. In very good condition, with paper loss to the edges, scattered light foxing, fragile horizontal folds and a few partial fold separations.

Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick (1587–1658), was an English colonial administrator, admiral, and Puritan who commanded the Parliamentarian navy during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. He was instrumental in supporting English colonization efforts in New England, especially through the 1630 Warwick Patent, which facilitated settlement in Connecticut and reinforced Puritan migration and governance in the region.
