Collection of 21 items related to the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986, which killed all seven members of the STS-51-L mission: Dick Scobee, Michael J. Smith, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judy Resnik, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe. The collection includes: a 256-page softcover ‘Report of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident”; an official color glossy 10 x 8 red-numbered NASA photograph (S85-44253) of the crew of the STS-51-L mission, the reverse bearing “This Paper Manufactured by Kodak” watermarks; three official color 8 x 10 NASA lithographs of Jarvis, Scobee, and Smith in their flight suits; a group of NASA ‘Biographical Data’ sheets for all seven crew members; a stapled 9-page NASA memorandum packet with the subject: “STS 51-L DSO Crew Pacxket and Requirements Matrix”; an official embroidered STS-51-L mission patch; color 18 x 24 poster entitled “Salute to the Crew of the Challenger,” dated April 1986; issue of NASA’s ‘Space News Roundup’ from February 7, 1986, with ‘In Memoriam’ content for the STS-51-L mission; issue of People magazine from February 10, 1986, with McAuliffe on the front cover; issue of Time magazine from February 10, 1986, with image and text for the “Space Shuttle Challenger, January 28, 1986”; special collector’s edition magazine entitled ‘A Tribute to America’s Space Heroes’; a section of the Houston Chronicle from May 4, 1986, with an article related to the funeral of Michael Smith; and a wedding invitation for the 1987 marriage of Scobee’s son, Richard William Scobee. In overall very good to fine condition, with light scattered wear, and the covers detached from the McAuliffe People magazine.
Also included are additional items related to the Space Shuttle program, including: a 1983 issue of People magazine signed by Sally Ride; two official NASA lithographs of the STS-2 and STS-27 crews, which are respectively signed in black felt tip by each pictured crew member; an issue of NASA’s ‘Space News Roundup’ from April 30, 1982; and a group of seven embroidered patches for STS-6, STS-7, STS-8, STS-9, STS-41-B, STS-41-C, and STS-51-A.
