Pair of foundry cast bronze bookends made from metal reclaimed during the 1927 restoration of the USS Constitution. Each bookend measures approximately 5.75˝ x 6.25˝ x 1.5˝, with lead-filled bases and ship wheel-shaped designs featuring central medallions that depict the three-masted heavy frigate, inscribed with text listing its battles and triumphs: "Old Ironsides, Launched 1797, 1804 Tripoli, 1812 Guerriere Java, 1815 Cyane Levant, U.S. Frigate Constitution." The bases are inscribed with the legend: "This material was taken from U.S. Frigate Constitution 1927." In fine condition, with the book-holder tabs in the rear somewhat bent, as typical.
From 1927 to 1931, the USS Constitution underwent a major restoration, during which materials removed from the ship—such as copper sheathing, bolts, and nails—were melted down and repurposed into souvenirs. These items, including bookends, ashtrays, and plaques, were sold to the public to raise funds for the restoration and to promote 'Old Ironsides' as a significant American historical icon.
