Description

Original vintage glossy 9.27 x 7 UPI wirephoto featuring a close-up of Senator John F. Kennedy at a news conference "at which he declared that his West Virginia primary victory has 'diminished substantially, if not eliminated' the religious issue as a factor in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination." Reverse is stamp-dated May 27, 1960. In fine condition, with trivial creases to corner tips.

Kennedy's Catholic faith was the subject of much discussion and controversy during both his senatorial and presidential campaigns. He overcame this rather mainstream prejudice by steadfastly supporting the separation of church and state, and proved his national appeal when he unexpectedly won the West Virginia Democratic primary in May 1960.
