Spencer Model 1865 Repeating Carbine, serial no. 12743, 56-50RF, with a shortened 14.75˝ barrel, stamped on top: "M1865" and "Spencer Repeating Rifle Co., Boston, Mass., Pat'd March 6, 1860." Interestingly engraved on the stock with forward-facing arrows, and retains its flip-up rear site and saddle ring; the magazine tube is secured by a small piece of electrical tape. Exhibits a handsome overall patina.
The Spencer Carbine M1865 was an improved version of the earlier Spencer repeating rifle, widely used during the American Civil War. Designed by Christopher Spencer, this model retained the signature 7-shot tubular magazine in the buttstock but featured refinements for smoother operation and greater reliability. Chambered in .50 caliber rimfire, the M1865 saw its principal service during the Indian Wars. Its rapid-fire capability gave cavalry units a significant advantage over single-shot muzzleloaders, marking an important step in the evolution of repeating firearms.
