Uncommon airmail cover flown aboard the record-setting flight of the Sikorsky S-42 Pan American Clipper, 9.5 x 4, postmarked at Bridgeport, Connecticut on August 1, 1934, and stamped "This Letter Actually Carried on Record Flight." Signed vertically in fountain pen, "C. A. Lindbergh, Aug. 1, 1934," "Boris Sergievsky," and "Edwin Musick." In fine condition. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.
On August 1, 1934, Pan American World Airways conducted a test flight of the Sikorsky S-42 long-range flying boat before accepting the new plane into its fleet. Pan Am chief pilot Edwin Musick, Pan Am technical advisor Charles Lindbergh, and Sikorsky test pilot Boris Sergievsky flew the S-42 on a 1,242 mile course, carrying the equivalent weight of 32 passengers, a crew of five, and 2,000 pounds of mail and cargo. The plane averaged 157.5 MPH during the test and set eight world records for speed, payload, and altitude.
