Description

Original socket bayonet for the Civil War-era conversion of earlier .69 caliber muskets, measuring 21.25˝ long, marked "U.S." on the ricasso. Complete with its leather scabbard with brass tip and eight-rivet construction. Exhibits overall wear and patina, lightly mottled down the blade. Accompanied by a letter from Shiloh Relics, relating verbal history "that it was carried by Dexter Walker who served with the 11th Maine Infantry during the Civil War."

At the outbreak of the Civil War, the federal government decided to convert old flintlock muskets—made by firms such as Remington or Hewes & Phillips—to percussion. This bayonet would fit such a conversion, easily distinguished from standard bayonets by the early-style socket and fuller groove (like the M1855 bayonet), with a full-length blade.
