Description

Desirable pairing of DSs signed “George R. I.,” comprised of two monarch-approved commissions for Thomas George Peacocke, both two pages, 7.75 x 12.5 and 8 x 13, dated June 3, 1916, and June 23, 1922. The earlier document appoints Peacocke, “Lieutenant Colonel in Our Indian Army, Army Remount Department…to be an Additional Companion”; and the later document appoints Peacocke “to be a Commander of Our Royal Victorian Order.” Both are signed at the top of the first page by King George V, with the earlier bearing its original affixed seal and countersigned by Austen Chamberlain, and the later bearing an embossed Royal Victorian Order seal and countersigned by John Stewart-Murray, 8th Duke of Atholl.

The lot includes a TLS from Sir Francis Morgan Bryant of the Royal Victorian Order, forwarding a scarce 22-page booklet entitled ‘The Statutes of the Royal Victorian Order,” dated October 30, 1918, which is included; and a letter to Peacocke from Buckingham Palace dated October 9, 1922, forwarding a ‘Grant of Dignity’ and requesting that affirm that he received “the Insignia of a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by an original mailing envelope addressed to “Colonel Thomas G. Peacocke…Director-General of Remounts Dept. In India.”
