Description

Two TLSs signed “RN,” both one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, January 15, 1985, and January 13, 1987, both addressed to Carl Howell. The earlier letter, in part: “Since a rather severe case of shingles made my 72nd birthday a major media event, I wanted you to know that your thoughtful letter helped to make the day a very special one for Mrs. Nixon and for me. As you can imagine, we have had a lot of inquiries with regard to the state of my health and scores of recommendations as to miracle cures. My doctor tells me that none of them will work but reassures me that while shingles is extremely painful, it is never fatal. Consequently, I expect to be around for a few more birthday celebrations in the future!” The second letter, in part: “It was most thoughtful of you to remember me as you did on my birthday. Nineteen eighty-seven is an especially significant year for me because it was just 40 years ago that I began my political career as a freshman member of the 80th Congress. As I look back over the past four decades, there is nothing that is more heartwarming than your continued expressions of friendship.” In overall fine condition, with a thin strip of toning near the bottom edge of each letter.
