Career military officer (1819–1901) in the United States Army, most noted for his role as a division commander in the Army of the Potomac during the final full year of the American Civil War. Large archive of 25 ALSs, twelve signed in full ("Geo. W. Gerry") and thirteen signed with initials ("Geo. W. G."), totaling over 70 pages, all written to his wife Elizabeth between 1881 and 1883. Writing from Governor's Island, Bethesda, and Wheaton, Maryland, Getty relates familiar content regarding his travels and reunions, with mentions of meeting George McClellan, John Pope, Winfield Scott Hancock, and others. He discusses Grant interceding on his behalf, mentions West Point, and makes note of his desire to retire: "Gen'l Sherman is to be here today. If I can have the opportunity to speak to him I intend asking him to relieve me from this command." In overall very good to fine condition. Accompanied by a 10 x 8 mounted photograph showing Getty and comrades in uniform at Fort Monroe, and a generous lock of hair wrapped within an envelope addressed to Getty in care of one of his in-laws (presumably a lock of his wife's hair sent as a keepsake).
