Description

Two letters to fellow writer Ivan Somerville: TLS signed "Sinclair Lewis," one page, 8.5 x 11, December 11, [no year], in part: "At last we are beginning to plan to edge back toward New York—leave here in three or four weeks, go to Los Angeles, Pasadena, Riverdale, San Diego, El Paso, San Antonio, New Orleans, and to NY by steamer from N.O. We'll have been here three months, and work has gone well—several stories taken by Post and Metropolitan, etc."; and a TLS signed "Sinclair Lewis," one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, April 17, 1931, in part: "I don't know anything about the Galton Publishing Company but I hope that everything goes magnificently with you. I have never forgotten how many hundreds of times you enabled me to carry on through the hellish two years with Uncle George Doran, either by finishing up my work or by listening in while I cussed about Uncle George. Because of this, I would be delighted if it were possible for me to boost 'Scattered Death.' If I liked the book, I should certainly do so, but unfortunately I do not very greatly like it. I think that is probably because I am not very fond of detective and mystery stories and not a good judge of them. I think it is a splendid beginning and I hope that you will go on writing now that you have made this start." In overall fine condition, with a small edge split to one letter.
