Two items: a glossy 8 x 10 bust photo of a bearded Scofield in costume, signed in black felt tip, “Paul Scofield, with best wishes”; and an ALS signed "Paul Scofield," one page both sides, 6 x 8, personal letterhead, September 17, 1981, in part: "I have found that my biggest satisfaction is working in the theatre… What do I look for in a role? Well I suppose it’s a certain snap of recognition. I don’t look at whether I like or dislike a character, but whether or not I recognize him as being an aspect of human nature that I feel I can portray, i.e., someone into whose shoes I can put myself. And of course I care about the quality of the writing as my main interest is to interpret the writer, as the instrumentalist interprets the composer. When having found this recognition, I develop a character entirely in rehearsal and in relation to the other actors and in what we give to each other. In this way I think we all grow together & so the play grows…This is short & to the point I hope, but it’s really only the work itself that teaches." In overall very good to fine condition, with some light bends to the photo.
