The screenplay for the 1978 film Superman was originally written by acclaimed author Mario Puzo, best known for The Godfather. Though Puzo provided the foundational script, it was heavily revised by other writers, including David and Leslie Newman and Robert Benton, to adjust tone and structure. Director Richard Donner also brought in Tom Mankiewicz to further rewrite the screenplay, polishing dialogue and enhancing the film’s balance of mythic grandeur and lighthearted charm. According to Mankiewicz, 'not a word from the Puzo script was used.'
