Description

"I was born in 1884 and I happened to have had two extra dollars which I gave to the Captains of the Ball Teams of the Army and Navy"

Two TLSs, signed "Harry S. Truman," each one page, 7 x 10, personal letterhead, June 16, 1953, and June 24, 1959. The first, in part: "I read your letter of the sixth with a great deal of interest and I wish I had Carson City dollars enough to go around, but I haven't. I was born in 1884 and I happened to have had two extra dollars which I gave to the Captains of the Ball Teams of the Army and Navy. I am sorry I can't accommodate you. My suggestion to you would be to go to the Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco and ask them to give you an 1884 dollar. I am rather of the opinion that they can do it"; the second, in full: "I certainly did appreciate those twenty-six '1884' dollars. I was supposed to give you one at the Waldorf that night and I didn't get it done, so I am enclosing it." Impressively matted and framed with two Morgan dollars—one with the front showing the "1884" date, and one with the reverse showing the "CC" mint mark—as well as the original mailing envelopes (one with a pre-printed free frank) to an overall size of 22 x 23.75. In fine condition. A fantastic display with numismatic interest.
