Description

“To Catherine, The gal that knows that nobody no’s me, yours sincerely, Mae West"

Two items: a large vintage matte-finish 10.75 x 13.75 portrait photo of West wearing a wide-brimmed hat and long diamond earrings in a lovely up-close pose, signed and inscribed in white ink, “To Catherine, with best wishes, Mae West, 1934”; and a hardcover first edition of the 1932 book Diamond Lil, published by the Macaulay Company of New York, signed and inscribed on the first free end page in fountain pen, “To Catherine, The gal that knows that nobody no’s me, yours sincerely, Mae West.” In overall very good to fine condition, with light wear and sunning to the book's spine and covers.

Accompanied by a vintage matte-finish 7.5 x 9.25 photo of West with the recipient, Catherine Quinn, as well as a printed photo of a newspaper article from March 4, 1934, with the headline: “Lakewood Girl Meets Mae West on Prize Trip.” The article begins: “Catherine Quinn, the Cleveland girl whose slogan for Mae West in a film fan magazine contest won her first place and a trip to Hollywood, is spending what is probably the most exciting week of her young life among the studios and stars of cinemaland.” The lower section features another image of West with Quinn.
