Original vintage glossy 9.25 x 7 AP wirephoto of Joseph Stalin saluting during a May Day parade, dressed in his distinctive military tunic and peaked cap as premier of the Soviet Union, published by the Associated Press on March 5, 1953, on news that the Soviet leader's health was rapidly deteriorating. Reverse bears an "Associated Press Newsphoto" credit stamp and retains its affixed caption, reading: "Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, reportedly hovering between life and death in Moscow, March 5, raises hand in salute during more active days. According to Russian movie sources which released this picture to U.S. newsreels, Stalin is shown reviewing a May Day parade, presumably in 1946, the year the photo was released." Stalin would pass away on March 5th. In very good to fine condition, with a diagonal crease to the right side, an editorial mark over his raised hand, and light edge rippling.
