Uncommon book: Inauguration of the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World. NY: D. Appleton & Company, 1887. Softcover, 6.25 x 9, 62 pages. Issued under the authority of the American Committee, the book contains an account of the proceedings at the inaugural ceremonies for the Statue of Liberty on Bellow's Island, New York, on October 28, 1886, and boasts a reproduction of the engraved invitation to the event as its frontispiece. In addition to full texts of the addresses given at the dedication, the book features the first appearance of John Greenleaf Whittier's poem, 'The Bartholdi Statue,' on pages 61–62. In good to very good condition, with heavy damage and loss to the detached covers; interior pages are overall clean, with some small edge tears and creases to the final few pages.
