Uncommon Apollo 12 embroidered mission patch, 3˝ in diameter, which includes a TLS from Apollo 12 CDR Charles Conrad attesting to the patch’s flown status. The letter, one page, 5.25 x 8, NASA letterhead, October 27, 1970, addressed to Walter O. Rich, in full: “This is to certify that this patch flew with me on board Yankee Clipper and Intrepid to the Ocean of Storms, Moon, during the period of 14-24 November 1969 on Apollo XII.” Includes the original mailing envelope. In fine condition.
Accompanied by a notarized letter of authenticity from the son of the patch’s original owner, Walter Owen Rich, who was given this patch by a man named “Casey,” an associate of the Golden Empire Council, a nonprofit affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, of which Rich was a Scout Executive. An included typed letter from Casey to Rich, dated December 1969, concludes with the paragraph: “In closing, I managed to pick up an Apollo 12 patch. Big deal! It turns out that a few patches went to the moon and back. This particular one was carried by Pete Conrad, from whom I obtained it. I explained about the Apollo Round-up you are having, and it was pretty much duck soup to convince him that it belonged in the hands where it belongs. Use it whatever way you see fit.” Other accompaniments include clipped newspaper articles, research documents for the patch, and several embroidered Boy Scout patches, including two “Apollo Roundup ‘69” Patches.
