Description

Large and impressive oversized 28.5 x 21.5 mezzotint engraving entitled "Lincoln and Family" by William Sartain after a painting by Samuel Bell Waugh, published by Bradley & Co. of Philadelphia, imprinted in the lower border with an 1866 copyright notice. The detailed scene shows the family in a private parlor in the White House: President Lincoln is seated with Tad beside him, Robert stands behind, and Mary Todd sits nearby. A portrait of Willie, who died during Lincoln’s first term, hangs behind Robert. The image is filled with symbolism: a vase on the table is filled with Northern roses, Southern sweet clematis, and Virginia creeper, representing North-South unity, and a bust of George Washington in the background represents the connection between the nation's 'Father' and its 'Savior.' Framed to an overall size of 35 x 28. In very good to fine condition, with light overall toning and a few stains to the borders.
