Desirable pairing of two items: a personal check, 7.25 x 3, filled out and signed by Frances Cleveland, "Frances F. Cleveland," payable to Grace Turner for $5, November 20, 1903; and a very rare ALS by her daughter Ruth, signed "Ruth Cle," one page, 4.5 x 7, Executive Mansion letterhead, no date, to her governess Jennie Lander. The child writes to her caretaker in crude cursive, in full: "I'm so glad to hear you are comeing home again Dear Annie said you would be home to morrow after noon I am so happy." Includes the original Executive Mansion envelope, addressed in Ruth's hand to "Jennie Lander." In overall fine condition.
The eldest daughter of Grover Cleveland and Frances Folsom Cleveland, Ruth Cleveland (1891–1904) was born between Cleveland's two terms in office and became especially beloved by the nation. A sickly child, she contracted diphtheria on January 2, 1904, and tragically passed away five days later. The 'Baby Ruth' candy bar was reportedly named in her honor.
