Description

Rare judge’s badge from the rowing events of the Berlin 1936 Summer Games

Judge’s badge issued for ‘Rowing’ at the Berlin 1936 Summer Olympics. Silver-tone, 41 mm x 46 mm, 14 gm, manufactured by Lauer, featuring the Olympic rings over the Brandenburg Gate. The front is engraved "XL Olympiade Berlin 1936" and “Richter,” which translates to ‘Judge.’ The reverse is numbered “1141” and stamped with the maker’s mark. Complete with its original faded light blue ribbon, which measures 64 mm in length and is marked “Rudern.”

A rare and sought-after badge from the historic Berlin Games. The rowing competition was dominated by the hosts, Germany, who medaled in every event and took five of the seven gold medals. The final race, men's eights, was won by a working-class United States team from the University of Washington who, in what had become their trademark, started slow and outsprinted the competition to an exceedingly close finish, with only one second separating the top three finishers at the end of a six-and-a-half minute race. This event is chronicled in the book The Boys in the Boat written by Daniel James Brown, which was adapted for film in 2023 by producer and director George Clooney.
