Description

Cinderella's magical carriage ride—a gorgeous concept painting from a Disney master

(Walt Disney Studios, 1950) Beautiful original concept painting by Mary Blair for Cinderella, which depicts the title character's horse-drawn carriage on its way to the royal ball. A magical and mysterious scene from Blair, who spotlights the carriage and its quick-moving horses under a glowing full moon, one that shines both from the deep blue of the night sky and from a rolling river below. Complementing the darker colors are hints of purple and pink, which are seen in distant clouds and in waving capes and plumes. The action and setting of the scene are also brilliantly captured, with the sound of galloping hooves and wooden wheels upon a gravel path easily conjured by one’s imagination. Accomplished in tempera on 8 x 7.5 artist's board. Archivally triple-matted and framed to an overall size of 14.5 x 14. In fine condition. Blair was a concept artist for Disney during the 1940s and early 1950s, working on designs for such films as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland. She also created designs for several Disney attractions (including It's a Small World), and her largest work ever, the multistory mosaic in Disney World's Contemporary Hotel concourse.
