Description

Lennon-signed check that dates to just two days before his final in-person encounter with Paul McCartney

Lennon Productions Ltd. business check (National Westminster Bank Limited, New Bond Street Branch, London), 8 x 3.5, filled out in another hand and signed in black ink by John Lennon, payable to Moor House Secretaries for £135, April 23, 1976. In fine condition. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder.

Although the Beatles had broken up nearly six years prior, this check holds special proximity to a significant, if not somber, moment in the band’s history. On April 25, 1976, two days after signing this check, John Lennon saw Paul McCartney for the final time when the latter made an impromptu appearance at the former’s Dakota apartment building. Although the pair were on good terms, the encounter was not a success, as Lennon, then dealing with his six-month-old son, Sean, had to turn McCartney away.

Per Lennon: ‘That was a period when Paul just kept turning up at our door with a guitar. I would let him in, but finally I said to him, ‘Please call before you come over. It’s not 1956, and turning up at the door isn’t the same anymore. You know, just give me a ring.’ He was upset by that, but I didn’t mean it badly. I just meant that I was taking care of a baby all day, and some guy turns up at the door.’
