Laminated artist party credential issued for the Rock in Rio II festival in January 1991, 3.75 x 6.25, labeled on the reverse: "Prince" and "Kristi Willis, Tour Director, Prince." Includes a credit card-style pass for the catering tent. Prince headlined two nights at the festival, beginning with his Brazilian debut at the Maracanã stadium on January 18th. In overall fine condition.
Prince's former co-manager Jill Willis recalls: "Going to Rio de Janeiro for the Rock in Rio festival was so memorable! It was the first big project for Gilbert and I after becoming co-managers of Prince. He was paid a lot of money to open and close the festival and wanted to do something for a local charity to leave some of the money behind. Gilbert and I were taken to an orphanage but as happy as they were to meet us and graciously gave us a tour of the home and introduced us to many of the young residents, there was nothing they wanted. They said they were well taken care of by the local church (or churches) in the area. It was so moving to be there. I remember squatting down to speak to a young child and about three other toddlers ran and jumped to get in my lap or be close against me—in the same way puppies might 'attack' when you sit on the floor with them. The Brazilian people were so beautiful, and I was struck by the way the people had skin in a beautiful array of colors. There were so many popular artists playing that festival—George Michael, INXS, Guns N' Roses, New Kids on the Block—and we were all staying at the same hotel (Rio Palace). The first Gulf War broke out while we were there—the first 'war on TV' and it was a bit scary. Especially when the 'who's who' of pop music were all under one roof!"
