Description

Unique 36″-long hand-crafted cane made by William A. Hutchinson of Tarentum, Pennsylvania, using wood from George Washington's birthplace. The cane is annotated in ink, "From George Washington's Birthplace—Holly." The handle appears to be ebony and walnut, with the tip executed in matching walnut. In fine condition.

William A. Hutchinson spent almost 50 years at the turn of the 20th century crafting canes and walking sticks from historic and exotic woods. By the time he died in 1949, he had amassed a collection of around 550 canes, almost all made by himself. His collection was featured in several newspaper articles of the period.
