Ship model diorama of the "S.T.S. Salween." The combination passenger/freight ocean liner was named after the Salween River that flows through Southeast Asia. The "S.T.S. Salween" was 7,063 gross tons, 462ft × 59.2ft, single screw, speed 14 knots, accommodation for 70-1st class passengers. Launched 22nd Oct. 1937 by Wm. Denny & Bros., Dumbarton for P. Henderson's British & Burmese S.N. Co. and used on the UK - Burma service.
In 1941, she was converted into the naval troopship HMS Salween, and she took part in the evacuation of British troops from Greece. She served in East African waters for the rest of the war. 1946 returned to the Glasgow - Birkenhead - Burma service. 1952 taken over by Elder Dempster & Co., but continued the same service. 1962 scrapped at Hong Kong. Taken out of service in 1962, Salween was scrapped and broken up in Hong Kong.
An exhibition standard 50ft: 1in. scale waterline model of the Henderson Line S.T.S. Salween of circa 1938, built by E.J. Walpole, with masts, derricks and rigging and fine and full deck detailing including anchors, winches, deck rails, companionways, hatches, deck winches, superstructure with wheelhouse and wing bridges, ventilators, engine room lights and six lifeboats in davits. The hull, finished in black, cream, green and white, is mounted on a painted molded seascape.
The case, measuring approximately 13.75″ x 5.5″ x 4.75″, is handmade of a knurled wood veneer with a brass name plaque and four Turks head knots as feet. The model and diorama are in excellent condition. There is minor damage to one of the knurled wood veneer supports covering the glass dome.
