Description

American writer, poet, and diplomat (1853-1937) who helped to develop international copyright laws and is remembered for his cultural influence as editor of The Century Magazine. Two TLSs signed "R. U. Johnson," each one page, Editorial Department, The Century Magazine letterhead, September 7 and 14, 1910, both to Jefferson Winter. In the first, he apologizes for a letter lost in the mail. In the second, he comments on potential publications, in part: "We…are glad to know that your father is already at work on 'Hamlet,' and that the other articles will take precedence of anything else which he has in mind. We wish to begin the group of article either in the January or February number as the preparation of the illustrated material will admit. In regard to the other series, we have only to add the hope that they may be placed in some periodical which will not come in direct competition with the Century, though of course we cannot in any way insist upon this desire to the detriment of the author." In overall fine condition, with rusty circular paperclip impressions to the center of the second letter.
