Description

Group of souvenirs and ephemera from the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, a World’s Fair held in Buffalo, New York, from May 1 through November 2, 1901. The fair occupied 350 acres (0.55 sq mi) of land on the western edge of what is now Delaware Park, extending from Delaware Avenue to Elmwood Avenue and northward to Great Arrow Avenue. It is remembered today primarily for being the location of the assassination of United States President William McKinley at the Temple of Music on September 6, 1901. This group includes: (a) Press Pass for the Pan-American Exposition May 1st to Nov. 1901 (Buffalo, NY), No. D3267. Intricate engravings and signatures on both sides of the press pass. Issued to S. Terwilliger - “Democrat at Callicoon” [apparently the Sullivan County Democrat (Callicoon, N.Y.)]. Very good condition, with small foxing spot at outside border. (b) Official Catalogue and Guide for the Pan-American Exposition (224 pages). Published by Charles Ahrhart, Buffalo, NY. Large foldouts of the Plan of the exposition and map of the City of Buffalo. Insert handbill “The True History of the Original Cardiff Giant . . . Now on Exhibition on the North Midway.” (c) Encased Indian Head penny, 1901, Good Luck Souvenir, Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo, NY. Lucky Penny - I’m It - Pocket Piece. (d) Match Safe and Cigar Cutter, Pan-American Exposition Buffalo. Official image of allegorical woman merging into Niagara Falls; reverse has intricate presentation of Manufacturers & Liberal Arts Building; perfect working order. (e) Ellicott Square Directory (Dec. 1, 1900) with Pan-Am advertisements. Ellicott Square, Buffalo, NY, Classified Business Directory with image of the classic office building on the cover - “The Largest and Most Complete Office Building in the World. Advertisements and listings for Pan-American Exposition related businesses including The Pan-American Printing and Engraving Company, Dirnberger Co. (“Call on me at the Pan-American 1901 for Pop Corn and Peanuts”), and others. (f) The Cosmopolitan, An Illustrated Monthly Magazine, September 1901. Souvenir Number of the Buffalo Exposition, The Americas’ Exposition Number, More Than 100 Illustrations.
