Description

Original vintage 3.5 x 3.5 photograph of President William McKinley seated in an automobile next to prominent New York lawyer John G. Milburn as they exit the Niagara Falls Power House on September 6, 1901, the very day that McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. The photo is affixed to its original 5.25 x 5.5 mount, the back of which is annotated by the photographer, which reads: “This picture of President McKinley was taken about an hour before he was shot. He was crated in his carriage with John G. Milburn, Director General of the Pan American on his left and was just leaving the main entrance to the Niagara Falls Power House. Sept. 18, 1901, Niagara Falls, NY.” In fine condition, with irregular staining to reverse. John Milburn is perhaps best known as the president of the Pan-American Exposition, the 1901 World's Fair in Buffalo, who prepared a suite in his house to host President McKinley, on the tail end of his second inauguration tour. After the president was fatally shot, he was treated at the hospital and brought back to Milburn's home, where he died eight days later.
