American statesman (1814-1886) who served as Governor of New York and who was the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate in the infamous disputed election of 1876. Partly-printed DS, signed “S. J. Tilden,” one page, 17.75 x , February 1, 1866. Large and impressive first mortgage bond for the Indiana Southern Railway Company in the amount of $1000, with 59 of the coupons intact. Signed on the front by the company's secretary and president, and signed on the rear panel in ink by two trustees, including Samuel J. Tilden. In fine condition, with intersecting folds.
