Description

Partly-printed DS, signed “C. P. Comegys,” one page, 7.75 x 5.75, November 4, 1822. Stock certificate issued to the "Trustee of the School Fund" for 52 shares in the capital stock of the Farmers Bank of the State of Delaware, boldly signed at the conclusion by Cornelius Parsons Comegys as cashier. In fine condition.

The Farmers' Bank of Delaware was the second bank chartered by Delaware, operating from 1807 until 1981. In 1823, the treasurer of the state of Delaware was directed to deposit all state monies in the Farmers Bank, and was directed to open a separate account there to accumulate funds for the establishment of schools. Cornelius Parsons Comegys, a veteran of the War of 1812 and a state representative, would go on to serve as governor of Delaware from 1837 to 1841.
