Description

Antique State of Georgia $1000 second mortgage bond of the Macon and Brunswick Railroad Company, issued September 1, 1868, 18 x 25.5, complete with 25 coupons attached below. Carrying a 7% annual rate, the bond features an ornate border with a trio of vignettes to the upper section: a woman carrying a basket of cotton, a man holding a scythe, and a train with billowing smoke. Signed at the conclusion by George Hall Hazlehurst as president. In fine condition, with light edgewear.

The Macon and Brunswick Railroad ran from Macon, Georgia to Brunswick, Georgia. Its construction was interrupted by the American Civil War, and initially only ran from Macon to Cochran, Georgia. The 5 ft (1,524 mm) gauge line was completed and extended to the Georgia coast when it opened in its entirety in December 1869. Construction of the line stimulated the lumber industry along its path, and the founding of new towns and counties.
