[Daniel Ruggles] Lot of (3) Civil War Letters

Description

Group of three Civil War-dated letters forwarded to Daniel Ruggles, a Brigadier General in the Confederate States Army (1810-1897) who is best remembered as a division commander at the Battle of Shiloh. The two-page letter, 5 x 8, dated September 20, 1862, is addressed to Ruggles by George William Martin of the Provost Marshal’s Office in Tangipahoa, Louisiana, in part: “I enclose two letters just received by me from St. Tammany & also note from Capt. Foster, in which he says that it is reported that the enemy will repeat the attack at Ponchatoula in layer force. The gentlemen he refers to did not come up…None of the prisoners taken at Ponchatoula have been reported to this post. I understand that Genl Thompson has concluded to return Capt. Thornton, the surgeon & one prisoner acting as steward to the surgeon to New Orleans under flag of truce.” Affixed within the interior leaves is the referenced handwritten note from Captain George Foster, dated to “Saturday morning,” and a note from Provost Marshal LeBlanc, dated September 19, 1862, both of which concern a suspected repeat attack at Ponchatoula.
